FLSHBK DRY: Smigelsmelts AKA Holstener Liesel AKA Vegan spread

Eating the recommended David Fischer fries in Hamburg

28/01/13 Monday, Hamburg

We headed out to Liam's and Linda's yesterday - they have a really nice spot. They share it with Linda's Mum some nights. They have to sleep on a fold out couch. I wouldn't be able to handle that. It'd suck, but I guess it works for them, so I am happy for them.

Have just written out postcards for the family. Watching JE on the laptop. Listening to Bright Eyes in preparation for Conor Oberst tomorrow night. Trying a veggie version of currywurst tomorrow too (German traditional food)! So at Liam's and Linda's we had tea, chatted, went sledding, had a snow fight and ate from a hot plate type of thing that sat on the table. Also drank a lot of wine and woke up really late this morning! 11AM. That's super late. We trained to back to town and checked into our hotel which incidentally is REALLY smelly. We then went to Saturn (it's pretty much a massive Noel Leeming, but better), then had David Fischer (fries recommended by Liam), then the harbour with it leading onto Reeperbahn. It's like the sex side of Hamburg. There's a naughty street that women aren't allowed to walk down. JE checked it out but said there was nothing to see. [It was totally creepy and no photo's were allowed. I was left by myself on a corner, so JE rushed back to check I was okay]. We saw The Beatles' art installation where they used to play. The area near Linda's work is really rad. The St Pauli area - nice shops and food areas. We went to MR KEBAB, and it was delicious. Beer is so cheap. Off we went to the theatre to Oedipus - pretty posh of us. Hah. We couldn't understand a thing with it being in German and all! But a cool experience nonetheless.

It's late already. Should head to sleep. Ice skating tomorrow.

{Insert doodle of Oedipus' Mum drowning/killing herself in a bucket on stage}

Before you come to Europe you should be aware that bread rolls are the norm at breakfast time. Please note the "smigelmelts" below the bread rolls which I recommend you try! (It's actually called Holstener Liesel, which is a vegetable fat with apples and onions.. and it's vegan!)
