The Thirsty Scholar, Cord, Common, Soup Kitchen: Manchester

Straight after getting my nose piercing in Manchester town centre // Wearing I love Olga jumper, Maaike shawl, Lonely Hearts Club LOVE tshirt, Stolen Girlfriends Club bow ring, Katie Rose ring, Karen Walker cat ring

Diary entry from: 26th October 2013 Edinburgh, in bed.

Well my my, hasn't it been busy! I just dyed my hair, groceries brought, shopping, hair products brought.

After going from breakfast in Liverpool we went to the Cathedral. It was beautiful! The Lady Chapel was stunning. We even saw a squirrel up close outside. From there we tried searching for a piercing shop but to no avail.

On the road to Manchester. JE's friend told us some great places to go to in Manchester so on arriving we went to Northern Quarter. We wandered around and I got my nose pierced*. Crap it hurt - tears down my cheeks. When we walked into the shop/inside market The Phoenix Foundation were playing - sweet! It hurt so much, like they clamped my nose and shoved the needle in it. I wanted to get it done again as I'm still travelling and I don't really care about my 'professional' image at the moment.

We loved Northern Quarter. After exploring we decided to go to our hotel. We arrived at The Grapes Hotel. It was a pub with a pit bull dog roaming inside. We arrived and we were told that they don't do accommodation. FUCK. Wrongplacewrongplacewrongplace. Drove to the next place and we were instantly down-heartened by the state of the place. The chap was friendly enough though. But it was horrible. BUT it was a cool experience to have a pint in a suburbs of a Manchester pub whilst watching a soccer game on TV and hearing old men swearing and saying 'Fuck!' all the time.

We caught the train to town and walked to The Thirsty Scholar. We found it on a vegan Facebook group (thanks!) and got a Red Stripe pint. Before going to town I got bitten by a spider at our accommodation so I was feeling paranoid about that at the bar. We then walked to China Town but the restaurant that was meant to be good was all booked up. We went to Cedar Tree but that was closing. They were both BYOB and thats what we wanted. We couldn't find anywhere else. Rats. We ended up getting a drink at Cord, a bar in Northern Quarter in which I nearly got stuck in the toilet as the door had been freshly painted and was quite sticky. Once out of the toilet we charged on to find something to eat but we went outside to find it was pouring down with rain and all the bars we'd been told about (Common, Soup Kitchen) were not really bars but like sit-down-at-low-level-tables-and-drink-kind-of-places. I totally wasn't in the mood for that and that kind of thing only really works if you're with a group.

On the way back to Edinburgh we went to LEYLAND (!) and to Ikea. And that's our Blackpool, Liverpool and Manchester completed.

*It took 3 months to heal and I was about to give up on it. The piercing only healed once I went on holiday to Spain in New Years and after stopped playing with it. I think the best healing tip to give to some who is struggling with their nose piercing is to get the ring when you're getting it pierced - less chance of it falling out when you're sleeping or wear a plaster at night time until it heals. Also I found the aspirin paste worked well along with using tattoo aftercare. I used TINKture and used it quite often. Plus it's vegan!
