Flashback Diary: Naples in a Nutshit

Pizza from Pizzeria Degli Angelo was amazing! To get there we had to walk across a tiny street for ages - so long that we thought that we missed it

11/1/13 Napoli, Italy

Well things haven't ended up as lovely as it would seem. Naples isn't so great but we're trying to make the most of it all. Kind of overwhelmed by the city with its unfriendly attitude, uncleanness and general display. Last nights dinner was good but doesn't really compete with the pizza that we had today in Naples – so it's got that going for it. Great pizza!

Hopped onto the train this morning – feels like a lifetime a go! We accidentally hopped into the first class area – opps so that was quite hectic. God people are rude sometimes – just get out of the way and be polite! 2nd class is so much more relaxing anyway...

Getting advice from our Hotel Ideal lady – we went to Pizzeria Degli Angelo for an amazing pizza. After that we trained to the ruins of Pompeii and missed the last admissions by 5 mins! So unfair, took half an hour to get back into Naples where we got whisky and dinner from the supermarket. Hiding out now in hotel and will venture out tomorrow to the nicer part of town on the waterfront. Saw Mt Vesuvius though! Big volcano.. x

Missed the admission to Pompeii by 5 minutes - my advice: don't be late getting the train from Naples to Pompeii and go early in the morning // Wearing Ruby winter jacket

JE looking away from a view of what we missed in Pompeii - I suppose it would've been too depressing anyway?

[26/07/13 Looking back on this experience I think we were just too hard on ourselves, and expected way too much. Our first city was Rome; a beautiful city with clear English instructions on finding your way around the city, and when we arrived in Naples - our second stop on our 2 month trip, we weren't prepared at all. Little did we know that we should've stayed in Naples for one night and travelled further down the coast of Italy. Sorrento was a fantastic spot which I am so thankful that we managed to travel to - it is so close to Naples and just a train ride away so it took the sting off the whole Naples experience.

In hindsight - we were in another bloody country - how ungrateful am I for complaining about it?! I still think fondly of walking down a particular street in Napoli and being stared at because we were foreign, seeing fish market stalls, and then from that seeing a rouge squid squirming away on the cobbled streets. I also remember beautiful stained glass ceilings in the galleries of the high streets; eyes facing up, and then feeling the warm sun on my skin once out on the streets for a short period of time. Walking too far, needing to eat, not finding any vegan/vegetarian food - WHY ISN'T HUMMUS UNIVERSAL? - iPhone street sellers, homeless people having sexual encounters/seeing them being felt up, and seeing the knockoff handbag I wish I brought. Naples - you were alright but I wouldn't exactly recommend you to friends]

The above diary entry is a flash back to my ‘Europe’ diary.
