Diary entry from: 29th December 2013
Well we got food in the end after the crazy Christmas Eve day of travel. All was okay and it turned out that shops are open on Christmas Day. So many shops were open. I mean, do you really need to have your cellphone cover shop open on Christmas day?
On Christmas Day we woke up and Skyped our families in New Zealand and Australia, went for a walk around Hyde Park and (illegally) fed the squirrels. It was all great fun in Hyde Park with the squirrels and a beer. We covered our beers with christmas themed serviettes - that's some forward thinking right there.
We went back to our apartment and unwrapped our presents, I was very spoilt with lots of treats. Highlight would be the Lime Crime eyeshadow palette. We drank, talked, played cards, went for another walk, napped and ate food. So much food was eaten.
The next day was full of travelling to the bus stop, then to London airport. The plane was delayed from leaving London airport so we were running around trying to find the gate but we got there in the end. We arrived in Lisbon and it there was this gush of warm air - fantastic weather! We had dinner - my first paella in town along with some friendly locals offering us whatever drugs we wanted, including cocaine and off we went to sleep.
During the following day we went wandering up and down and through Chiado, San Jorge Castle, and through grass areas that looked like Paris. Napping in the afternoon is key I've found out. It makes you relaxed and ready for the night ahead.
We ate at home and then weirdly went to Bali Bar which we stumbled across. It was playing Jamiroquai.. on repeat. Like the whole album. Can't say that we stayed there long.
We woke up and caught the ferry over to Cacilhas and then the 135 bus to Costa da Caparica (for anyone interested in visiting a beach when they're in Lisbon). We grabbed an espresso and sat in the sun watching the waves crashing. The beach was beautiful - we ran on it and touched the North Atlantic sea.
We got a buffet meal from a vegan restaurant in Chiado after a round of bickering but full to our stomachs we napped, showered and went out to our favourite bar, Alface Hall which is also a hostel. It was still quite early but we went to Bairro Alto which is meant to be where the party area is. JE wanted to check out Lux but it didn't open till 11pm plus it was on the waterfront. In classic K and J style we went in search of The Food Temple but couldn't find it so gave up and went to Ositar (people were smoking inside!), but not before having a cherry liquor on the street side and buying a touristy tile as a keepsake of our Lisbon trip.
I have no idea what to expect in Madrid. Soccer? It's high up in the mountains? [No and No.]
