Diary entry from: 26th April 2014

Back in Istanbul we drank with the tour bus members and realised (too late) they weren't as young as originally thought, they were actually cool and they were on the same page as us.

A little bit hungover from drinking Raki, an Turkish alcoholic drink and trying Apple Shisha (Jared did, not I) we went exploring the city of Istanbul. We went to the Spice Market; with its smell overwhelming and then onto the Grand Bazaar. Both of which I didn't think were going to be so commercial, clean and not so original in comparison to others. At least we didn't go when it was too busy - that would get my senses in overload!

We waited in line for the Blue Mosque and after entering I was amazed by the size and colours inside. I was dressed appropriately with my headscarf and leggings. Of course.

We went on a Bospherous Boat Cruise up the strait that forms part of the boundary between Europe and Asia. Although the boat ride was rather boring it's pretty surreal saying you've been somewhere you can see continents at once!

Here's a thought cloud on Istanbul:

- People stand really close to you
- you need to get tokens for public transport
- protests with Polis in Taksim (we saw some of the protests before it got really bad)
- I wouldn't go back but I would encourage others to go (TBH this is what I say about most places)
- there's specific shopping areas
- find places where you can get free water
- brown eyes. So many beautiful brown eyes!
- wild cats and dogs
- it's a hard language to learn the basics of
- burkas
- beads
- big, empty spaces/buildings
- like Stockholm with the islands
- bagels
- a lot of flower displays on the motorways
