Diary entry from: 26th April 2014

I can't remember what I've been up to. On the last day of Santorini we used the quad and went to Ancient Thira - it was great!

Looking back, the quad that we used on Santorini was amazing as it gave us freedom that we wouldn't have had with a car or a scooter. After travelling via plane back to Athens we got picked up and taken to our hotel which was super flash - especially for us budget kiwis! It was a resort hotel and from what we gathered the resort was filled with mostly French holiday makers. We just got drunk on beer, Jared smoked a ladies cigar, and went to sleep.

The reason why we were staying at the French-holiday-maker hotel is because we had to get up early the next day to fly to Istanbul. On arriving in Istanbul we got on a bus that took us to Taksim Square and we walked to our hotel; which had a cat!

Quickly we went back out into Istanbul and saw the mosques, Basilica Cistern and found food. FYI it was a mixed platter along with Efes Beer. We had a quiet night due to the early morning rise.

Waking up we went to meet our tour bus for the Travel Talk ANZAC 3 day tour. This drove us to ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli with the tour party acting like they were at a high school camp. We had a few transitions of bus to holding point, holding point to bus but we finally got into the stadium-like area where we quickly found some grass to roll out our sleeping bags onto. Tight space. Barely enough room for my legs let alone Jareds.

There were (obviously) so many Kiwis and Aussies. The accents. Cringeworthy.

I had so many feelings about being there - I felt like the action of being there and the event was glorifying war; as if it was okay. As the service for ANZAC went on I started to realise that it was about my personal remembrance rather than supporting current or previous wars.

I brought one of these bagels. Maybe not the best tasting but I like his style!
