We went whilst Easter celebrations were in full swing. One of the churches in use at night time in the city centre.
Wow this place rules. I was told it wasn't that good, I mean it's really dirty but I don't think it's that bad! People seem nice and it's actually quite clean considering it's been around with so many people in it for so long. The only flaw is the amount of meat. So many lamb racks hanging in the streets and to hear the noise of the traders chopping them up just makes my stomach churn.
We arrived early and trained to town from the airport - we walked from the station to our hotel and from there we went out intending to do a hop on / hop off bus but decided against it and worked out that Athens is very walkable. On our feet we walked up to the Acropolis - so surreal, so sunny and so many stray cats. My favourite was the Temple of Athena with its column statues.
Jared had a freak out over the Theatre of Dionysus as after studying that in High School it was surreal to see.
From there it got dark quick and we were hungry so we went to Avocado for vegan falafel and pizza. It was an ok veggie restaurant but it was a bit too 'nice' for our liking. We bar hopped around to Booze Cooperativa which was pretentious/wanky, people smoking inside, cats and arty mirrors, religious live streaming on TV and chess being played across the tables. It was quite cool though and I tried my first Fix beer but we went to another bar and we both really enjoyed ourselves. I woke up with the dry mouth and a mean hangover.
Train out to Piraeus, fingers in the sea, pretzels and back to town for the Temple of Hephaestus then onto the National Archaeological Museum. Today all the sites are free because it's National Monument day. We will head out for food and drink tonight too and tomorrow maybe go to a lake for a swim. I'm totally *hoping* for good weather!
